West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee today said Subash Ghising will be the sole administrator of Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) after its term expires on March 26.
Making a statement on the floor of the state Assembly, the Chief Minister said this decision was taken to avoid any confrontation in the hills in view of the situation in neighbouring Nepal.
He said this decision has been taken in consultation with the Centre and yesterday he had spoken to Union Home Minister Shibraj Patil in this regard. (PTI)

Darjeeling, March 21: When it comes to the Darjeeling hills, there is no alternative to Subash Ghisingh.
That was the message that emerged, loud and clear, from Lal Khoti, which houses Ghisingh’s office among others, today when 25 councillors, heading different departments of the council, dramatically “surrendered” their powers before the GNLF chairman. (more…)

Kalimpong, March 21: A 10-day residential training programme on preservation and post-harvest technology of fruits and vegetables started today at the regional station of Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya.
Organised by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) for self-help groups formed under the Swarnajayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojana, it has been funded by the DGHC District Rural Development Cell and will be implemented by the Block Development Office. (more…)

NAZOK (Kalimpong), March 20. — Villagers living on the left bank of the Teesta were happy with the construction of a bridge on the river by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).
With the construction of the much-needed bridge, the villagers got relief from crossing the dangerous twin ropeway, installed almost 50 years back. (more…)

Darjeeling, March 20: The GNLF today maintained that election was not its priority, at a time when the government has decided to hold the DGHC poll in the next six months.
“Elections can happen anytime, but only if our demand for an alternative to the council is met. We would also want a constitutional guarantee to the present council. Instead of talking about holding election within the next six months, the government should concentrate on this primary issue,” said Shanta Chhetri, the Kurseong MLA.
Just when the government is desperately trying to make peace by acceding to most of Subash Ghisingh’s demands, the GNLF’s “real stand” on the council could cause great problem.

Kalimpong, March 20: Work on an incomplete reservoir, 1.85 km from Algarah, has resumed, kindling hopes of a solution to the water crisis plaguing Kalimpong.
The Rs 31.25 crore, government-sponsored Neora Khola Valley Scheme had proposed four water reservoirs for Kalimpong subdivision.
The construction of two reservoirs, started at Algarah in 1990, could not be completed due to fund constraints.
The reservoir at Lava had stopped functioning in 1995 as cracks had developed in it. (more…)
