KALIMPONG, May 2. — Retaliating to remarks by the ABGL, the former DGHC councillor, Mr Tshering Sherpa has said that it was a cheap political move by the anti-Ghisingh front.
Advising that the Opposition leaders should keep themselves in check, Mr Sherpa said: “I was elected as a councillor for three consecutive terms. Let me explain to my counterparts, that I have been elected by the people’s mandateâ€.
A few days ago, the ABGL had claimed that Mr Sherpa had a ‘dual citizenship’. The latter was accused of being a Nepalese citizen.
Pointing to the ABGL president, Mr Madan Tamang, he alleged: “He himself is a Nepalese citizen. Besides, he owns a tea garden out there.â€
“If they think I am an outsider, then let them prove it,†Mr Sherpa said adding, “The Opposition, instead of criticizing, should also learn to appreciate things. What about the development that has taken place in the form of roads and electricityâ€.
When asked about allegations of his involvement in the assassination of the late DGHC councillor CK Pradhan, Mr Sherpa said that there was no point in commenting on it.
However, the ABGL has been maintaining the allegation that has been made.
“Let him show any inheritance, ancestral property or the existence of parents or grandparents here. It is a fact that he hails from Nepal. The possession of a voter card isn’t certainly enough to prove ones citizenship,†ABGL leader Mr Pratap Kahti said.
“Besides, the form of development that has taken place in his constituency ‘Gidabling-Singhi’ are all Centrally-funded projects or that of the World Bank. If the general public feels that it’s his investment than they are mistaken. In fact, the constituency has only been a centre for minting money,†Mr Khati said.
