Kalimpong, May 25: A three-day workshop to discuss the adverse impact of the construction of low dams by the National Hydel Power Corporation (NHPC) in north Bengal and Sikkim will begin here from May 28.
Organised jointly by Siliguri-based NGO Nespon, Delhi Forum and a local body called Rashtriya Van Shramajeevi Manch, the workshop will be attended by NGOs and community representatives from parts of India where dams have been constructed by the NHPC.
Leela Gurung, the Kalimpong convener of the manch, said: “We are holding this workshop to tell people here the adverse effects the construction will have.”
“We have called people from Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Assam, where the NHPC has built dams, to speak on the adverse effects it had on their lives. We will also discuss the regulations that the NHPC flouted while constructing the dams,” he said.
