Concern over poor quality foodgrain

KALIMPONG, Oct. 28. — Alleging poor supply of foodgrain under the public distribution system, the CPI-M zonal committee of Kalimpong today met the SDO, besides contacting the Darjeeling controller, (food and supply). Mr Tara Sundas of CPI-M said: “We wanted to discuss the supply of poor quality of foodgrain over the past couple of weeks.” He alleged that the foodgrain being supplied were not fit for human consumption. “We were assured of replacements if low quality products were distributed,” Mr Sundas said while complaining about the irregular supply of kerosene and sugar.

Oct. 26 — Ex-officials of the DGHC have claimed that they would now work for the revival of the Arts and Crafts Centre, which was the glory of this once gateway to Tibet. They have said they would soon work for the reopening of the now closed Arts and Crafts Centre here despite the fact that a portion of the area of the centre is involved in a ‘legal hassle’. Besides it is caught in a debt of more than Rs 8 lakhs. (more…)

Total sanitation campaign to improve hygiene

KALIMPONG, Oct. 26. — A “total sanitation campaign” will now try to combat the infrastructure-poor hill district of Darjeeling. In a bid to upgrade the hygiene standards, the “total sanitation campaign” (TSC), was launched here in all the three blocks of the sub-division today. The project jointly sponsored by the Union and the state government, is being implemented under the district rural development cell (DRDC), DGHC. The TSC was announced for all the eight blocks of the hill district at a function held earlier this month. (more…)

The play, which is a fiction, was conceived by the distinguished Nepalese playwright, Mr CK Shrestra, way back in the mid-seventies. (more…)

WBFDC to build new cottages in Kalimpong

KALIMPONG, Oct. 25. — To add to the comfort of the tourists visiting Kalimpong sub-division, the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation (WBFDC) will be coming with at least half a dozen of new cottages in the next few months.
To begin with, four new cottages are being set up at Santhalay Khola, a popular tourist stop which falls in the Gorubathan block of the Kalimpong sub-division. (more…)

Play stages comeback

Kalimpong, Oct. 25: A hit Nepali play of the 70s and 80s is all set for a comeback on the Kalimpong stage.
Aaina Bhalemungro Runcha, a play that had captured the imagination of audiences for more than a decade, will be put up by the same theatre group — the Kalimpong-based Bhadre ko Toli — that had staged it first and will have most of the original cast. Sanitation project in Hills

All for a noble cause

GANGTOK, Oct. 24. — People travelling to Gangtok or Kalimpong can see hundreds of monkeys sitting on the roadside of National Highway 31 A, from Sevoke (Jalpaiguri district) to Rangpoo (Sikkim) for food items which they get from few good hearted travellers. But three employees of a bus, named ‘Apsara’, which ply from Gangtok to Silliguri everyday have been feeding these monkeys since the last six years. (more…)
