A glorious affair no more

KALIMPONG, Oct. 21. — It’s all history now. Once a supplier of quality hand-woven goods to the west, the ‘Arts and Crafts Centre’, here now is only a mere shadow of its former self.
It was known as the Catherine Graham Memorial Association and was founded in 1887 by late Catherine Graham in memory of late daughter of the famous Scottish missionary, Dr Graham who is also the founder of the famed institution of Dr Graham Homes. It is in fact the oldest handicrafts society in the whole of Darjeeling district. (more…)

College to get annual grant of Rs 5 lakh

KALIMPONG, Oct. 21. — After getting the clearance from the Union home ministry, the Kalimpong College would now receive an annual grant of five lakh rupees to improve its academic infrastructure and lift the economically and socially deprived students. (more…)

Brochure boost to offbeat spots

Kalimpong, Oct. 20: The West Bengal Forest Development Corporation (WBFDC) has plans to promote places with tourism potential as individual destinations.
In a pioneer move, the corporation has decided to make brochures on the various tourist spots across north Bengal and highlight the potential of these places. According to officials of the forest body, the programme will not dwell merely on popular destinations, but will also extend to the lesser-known areas. The WBFDC also plans to mobilise tour operators of the region to make this promotional step more successful. (more…)

A cop with true sportsman spirit

KALIMPONG, Oct. 18 — Besides maintaining law and order as a police officer, 37-year-old Mr Sherab D Lepcha, who is a sub-inspector with the Bengal police, is now trying hard to keep alive the dreams of several aspiring youths.
Mr Lepcha is sponsoring almost 28 youths from Kalimpong who will be participating in the first-ever World United Tae Kwan Do Championship to be held in Darjeeling from 21 October. (more…)

LPG shortage hits consumers, hotels

KALIMPONG, Oct. 18 — After bad roads and shortage of water, the hotel industry is facing another major problem, an acute shortage of cooking gas in this peak tourist season.
Fed up with the limited supply of gas over the past week the Hotels and Restaurants Association of Kalimpong (HORAK) has approached the local SDO to discuss the matter. (more…)

Trade hit by pass closure - Carding brush makers face woolly future

Kalimpong, Oct. 17: The carding brush manufacturing industry is dying a slow death here due to lack of demand.
Made of wood, leather and wire, carding brushes are used to manually clean and soften sheep wool with which carpets are woven. Kalimpong is the only place in India where carding brushes are made. Manufacturing of these brushes began here in the 50s, when the trade route to Tibet through Kalimpong (Jelep-la) was still open. (more…)

Kalimpong all set for kickboxing

KALIMPONG, Oct. 17. — Three days later the town will witness its first ever kick-boxing championship of the national level organised jointly by the Gorkha Hill Karate and the Sitoruy Karate and Kickboxing Association of Kalimpong (SKKAK). Narbula demands Central university in hills

KALIMPONG, Oct. 16. — Acting upon the requisition of the Darjeeling Congress MP, Mr Dawa Narbula for the setting up of a Central university in the hills the Union ministry of human resource and development has requested the government of West Bengal to advise the North Bengal University to take immediate measures for the introduction of a few hill oriented courses in the hill colleges. Mr Narbula has even raised the matter in the Parliament in 2004. (more…)

Water plan for the Hills

Kalimpong, Oct. 14: The agricultural department of the DGHC is planning a water harvesting scheme in two to three villages in this subdivision to provide for in the lean period.
The proposed scheme will be funded by the Centre and is part of the National Water Shed Development Project. The project has been operational from last year and a water harvesting tank, already functioning in Sindebung, has been constructed under this scheme. (more…)
