KALIMPONG, Nov. 29. — The ‘Monkey God’, in Kalimpong is all set to get a new lease of life. A samiti here will be installing a nine-ft tall statue of Lord Hanuman in the premises of Hanuman Mandir, at Baghdara.
One of the trustee of the Baghdara Hanuman Mandir Vyasta Samiti (BHMVS), Advocate DN Pandey said: “The site for the installation of the statue is surely a beautiful site in the midst of town. Besides beautifying the place we also wanted to safeguard it from encroachments.” (more…)

KALIMPONG, Nov. 28. — Perplexed over the ethnic beliefs of the Tamangs, a major ethnic community of the Nepalese population, the Tamang inhabitants of Pudung village near Kalimpong have planned to convene a debate session to decide whether the Tamangs should celebrate Durga puja or Lochar, a Buddhist festival, as a majority of the community come under the banner of All India Tamang Buddhist Association (AITBA). Kalimpong, Nov. 27: A non-government organisation, World Vision, is running a child development programme in different villages of the subdivision and South Sikkim.
“We are holding various competitions related to sports and education to sharpen the talent of the rural children,” said Yongden Rongon, coordinator of the project titled Talent Development Programme for Children. “Such activities boost the confidence of the children and help in their overall development.” (more…)

Kalimpong, Nov. 24: The age-old art of cross-stitches is all set to get a new lease of life here in the Hills.
Today was the second day of a three-day training programme being conducted at the Disha hall here by the Diocese of Eastern Himalayas (Church of North India).
In the course of the training programme, 30 women, some of whom came all the way from Darjeeling, will be groomed to become resource persons. (more…)

KALIMPONG, Nov. 21. — In retaliation to the latest political claims by the Union government, that a memorandum of settlement for the tribal status under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution for Darjeeling will be signed later this month, the hill Opposition questioned the possibility of the grant of status if the democratic norms of constitutional amendment are actually to be pursued. Kalimpong, Nov. 21: From next month, tourists to the Hills need look no further for guides with that little bit of local knowledge.
The West Bengal Forest Development Corporation has come up with a plan to introduce trained local people as “nature guides” from December. “Tourists can now opt for these guides if they want more information about the spots that they visit,” said N.S. Muruli, the divisional manager of the corporation. (more…)

KALIMPONG, Nov. 18. — With “Inquisitive 2004”, the first inter- district level quiz competition held by the BB Pradhan Institute of Business Management, being a hit among the locals of Kalimpong last year, the institute will host the inter-district level quiz competition tomorrow again in Kalimpong for the second time. The assistant faculty coordinator of BMC, Ms Arpana Pradhan said that the competition mainly targets to foster co-curricular activities among college students. (more…)

KALIMPONG, Nov. 17 — For the 58-year-old Joel Queyras it’s like finding ‘unity in diversity’ through the universal lingo of music.
Joel, who has travelled all the way from Bonnevaun, a small village in southern France, was enchanted by the Indian culture and tradition way back in 1968. That was during his first visit to India. (more…)

KALIMPONG, Nov. 17 — Popularly known as the ‘Bryan Adams’ of Nepali music, Sabin Rai, a Nepal-based artiste, will be performing here on 26 November.
Sabin Rai is all set to rock the crowd here in this show organised by Mazako Guys — a local event management group. The one-day event will feature Sabin along with the Angel band. Also called the ‘Bryan Adams’, of Nepali music Sabin is known for the husky performance of songs like Guraso Ko Phed Ma and Sundhar Tha Ko Udhar from his first album titled Sataha. Though this will be Sabin’ s first visit to this region he has already staged a number of shows aboard, like in Singapore and Brunei. (more…)
