Kalimpong, Aug. 24: Students of Kalimpong College boycotted classes in the second half of the day to protest against alleged teacher atrocity. The teachers, meanwhile, have demanded that a student be expelled for assaulting one of their colleagues yesterday.

The Kalimpong College Students’ Union, affiliated to the Gorkha National Students’ Front, the students’ wing of the GNLF, said the boycott will continue tomorrow as well.

The incident started yesterday when G.C. Mondol, a professor of economics, was taking a class of the first years. Distracted by the constant murmur coming from the direction of where Chewang Norbu Bhutia was sitting, Mondol reportedly scolded him and pulled his hair. At this, Bhutia allegedly assaulted Mondol.

The professor immediately lodged a complaint against Bhutia with the teacher in-charge of the college, R. Namchu. Though the teachers’ council demanded that Bhutia be expelled, Namchu refused to take such a step since the principal is currently absent. Instead, he has suspended Bhutia till August 28.
